The Venus Library

An Annotated Bibliography

History of the Imprint

In around early 1969, Barney Rossett, owner of Grove Press, made a deal with Kable News, a prominent book and magazine wholesaler, to introduce a new line of paperback erotica which would have a more mass market appeal than the existing Grove Press list published under the Black Cat and Zebra imprints. The idea was to bring in a new revenue source for Grove while making sure that a reasonable quality was maintained, particularly compared with the flood of cheap and poorly printed products from publishers like Continental Classics. So the Venus Library was born . Rossett  intended that rare and scarce works from the days of  censorship would thus reach a wider market. and the first half dozen or so titles certainly fitted that category.

Kable News had a different perspective – they required quantity – eight new titles a month and were prepared to provide funding to Grove to ramp up production. Grove certainly needed the money but there was a problem. Since the relaxation of book censorship in the USA and round the English speaking world in the middle sixties quite a bit of old erotica had been republished, much of it by Grove Press itself, but also by other publishers like Brandon House. Maurice Girodias had moved his Olympia Press to New York so his backlist was not available. While Rossett began to commission new works this was necessarily a slow process, and Kable News pressed ever harder for output.

There was only one quick solution – fill out the range by republishing work from other publishers disguised with new titles and authors. As all pornography was written under pseudonyms anyway, inventing more was no problem. It appears that Rossett approached authors directly and made the necessary deals. Thus Geoffrey Wagner, whose most well known pseudonym was P N Dedeaux, had most of his output published under the Venus imprint only a year or so after the work first appeared in Essex, Greenleaf and Taurus Press.

By far the biggest contributor to the project was Paul Little. Little was one of the most prolific pornographers of all time with a specialty for flagellation and discipline erotica. His pen provided over forty titles, most of which content had already appeared with other publishers in the three years before the Venus Library.

Despite these efforts the production could not meet Kable requirements, Rossett was obliged to clear his debts with Kable News by handing over the imprint. Kable News continued to publish the series but eventually tired of the project and sold it to Girodias who reinvented the imprint under the name Venus Freeway Press.

This bibliography is essentially a work in progress. For many of the titles no source has been found and in many cases no reprints have been found. It may be that some of the titles found their first printing in the Venus Library, but many of them were likely “taken” from other publishers not yet identified. Contributions from readers who can throw further light on these titles will be most welcome and fully acknowledged in future updates.

Where possible the true author is identified in square brackets after the nominal author.

This bibliography has been prepared with the help of several people, but special thanks are due to Patrick Kearney, publisher of the Scissors & Paste bibliographic web site. http://scissors-and-paste.net/ and the author of several works of erotic bibliography, who kindly provided me with his own research and has encouraged the project.

Much use has also been made of the “bible” of early erotic bibliography : Peter Mendes, Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English 1800-1930,Scolar Press, London, 1993.

V1003. — Tiffany Boots. — Five Men. 1969. Pp. 144. $1.50.

Chapters 1 and 2 are selections from a work titled Tales of Brigitte. Whether this is the same work as Tales of Villa Brigitte, a two volume novel published at Paris in 1910, is uncertain. Five Men is a reprint of an American work originally published c. 1930 with the imprint ‘London [New York]: Royal Press, 1905.’ The book was illustrated with “twenty copper plates” which were not included in the Venus Library edition, and may have been published by the Miller brothers who were well-known New York pornographers.

V1004. — Anon. — The Altar of Venus, wherein a late member of the House of Lords has given the true history of his erotic life. 1969. Pp. [vi]+244. $1.75.

A reprint of an American work first published, probably by the Miller brothers, with the imprint ‘London: The Anglo Esoterical Society, 1934.’ It had Illustrations signed ‘George Le Compte’, an artist who may also have signed himself ‘Jacques Merd.’ These illustration were not included in the Venus Library reprint.

V1005. — Anon. — John Krugge: The Autobiography of an Old Man in Search of an Orgasm. 1969. Pp. 127. $1.75.

The publisher of the original edition may have been Samuel Roth who, in the 1940s and 50s, had an imprint called Boar’s Head Books.

V1008. – [George Reginald Bacchus]. – Pleasure Bound Afloat.

Whether Pleasure Bound Afloat was published at all in the Venus Library series is not certain. I’ve been unable to find any repository copies, or copies offered for sale, but there are unverifiable reports that it was, and occupied the series number V1008. Since no other work has been located with this number I am leaving the rumour in place. Pleasure Bound Afloat was originally published at London in 1908 by, posthumously, Leonard Smithers who had died while the book was being printed.

V1009. – Bruce Abbot [Robert Sewell]. – The Sign of the Scorpion. An Erotic Mystery story. 1970. Pp. 223. $1.95.

V1010. – Mary Suckit. – Yvonne, or, the adventures and intrigues of a French governess with her pupils. 1970. Pp. 143. $1.45.

A work of complex pedigree. One authority proposes that it is a translation of a French work called Yvette ou l’institutrice per- vertie, the first edition of which has not come down to us, and the earliest versions known to us are translations into English (1898) and German (1900), both printed in Paris. The earliest known French version appeared in 1908. An alternate possibility is that the English text of 1898 came first, the French and German version being translation of that.

V1011. — Anon. — School life in Paris & lovely nights of young girls. 1970. Pp. 286. $1.75.

Reprints of two Victorian pornographic works. School Life in Paris was first published at Paris in 1897, possibly by Charles Carrington. Lovely Nights of Young Girls was originally published by Auguste Brancart in 1891 under the title Tit-Bits, Served up, Seasoned and Prepared for Amatory Feasts. Subsequent printings appeared as Lovely Nights of Young Girls, Served up, Seasoned and Prepared for Amatory Feasts. The first story comprises a series of letters from Blanche, aged seventeen, who has just been sent to a Paris finishing School, to her cousin Ethel, in England, with whom she had formerly been at school.

V1012. — Anon. — Edith’s strange desire: an erotic mystery story. 1970. Pp. 123. $1.25.

Written in the 1930s in the USA and circulated in Ms. under the title Life is like that. This would appear to be the first printed edition (but see V1074 below). Reprinted in GPVL B-559. The heroine, Edith Calhoun, fantasises about being spanked and forced to have sex with a dominant male and unsurprisingly this is just what she gets in real life.

V1013-Q. — Anon. — New Ladies’ Tickler or the Adventures of Lady Lovesport and the Audacious Harry. 1970. Pp. 160. $1.45.

Originally printed by William Dugdale 1866 with a subsequent reprint by Erotica Biblion c1902. Several modern reprints and ebooks available. An epistolary novel with an exchange of letters between Lucy and Emily with sex and flagellation being the main preoccupations.

V1014-Q. — Pierre Latour. — Up in Heaven. Translated by Louis Gaston. 1970. Pp. 160. $1.45.

V1015-K. – Gerda Mundinger [Paul Little] – Precocious youth: a study of teen-age sex in America. 1971. Pp. 159. $1.75.

V1017-K. — Anon. — Experiences of a Country Girl. Two volumes in one. 1971. Pp. 157. $1.75.

An anonymous and expanded version of Experiences of a Country Girl. Strange and very painful confessions of the beautiful slave girl Lucille (New York: Juniper Press, 1938) written by ‘Rhoda Wilkins.’ The original edition had [24] pages of plates signed ‘L Comte.’ A flagellation novel set in the Midwest where Lucille is sold by her parents to Mr. Raleigh who subjects her to whippings and forced sex alongside his other slave girls

V1018-K. — Alan McClyde. — The Calamities of Jane. [1971.] Pp. 155. $1.75.

‘Alan McClyde’ appears to have originally been a house pseudonym for a whole series of French flagellation and bondage novels published in the 1930s. In the 1950’s works using the same pseudonym were published in Paris. This novel is a rewrite of The Misfortunes of Mary by Arnold Kem (pseud). Oceanic Press, Paris 1958. The only change is that Mary O’Connor is now called Jane. This tale starts with Colonel Barrington, a rich English bachelor, acquiring from a local brothel madam a young Irish girl Jane O’Connor in order to give her an education. This “education” is largely sexual to satisfy the colonel’s considerable lusts. Jane is somewhat reluctant and many spankings and whippings are required in order to persuade her  to do her duty. Barrington offers her to his circle of friends, which include various depraved ministers of religion. A couple of new girls, Norah and Evangeline, are introduced to the party, and they, also, require flagellatory encouragement.

V1019-T. — Anon. — The Pleasures of cruelty; being a sequel to the reading of Justine etJuliette by the Marquis de Sade. 1971. Three vols. in one, pp. 53, 71, 68. $1.95.

This has no connection whatsoever to de Sade, but seems first to have been published at London c. 1886, possibly by either Edward Avery or William Lazenby. Peter Mendes in his superb bibliography of clandestine English erotic fiction 1800-1930 was unable to find a copy of the first edition, but surmises the date from clandestine publishers’ catalogues of the period. He suggests that the novel was   “written by one (or more) of the flagellant circle centred around Richard Monckton-Milnes (Edward Bellamy), General Studholm  Hodgson,Swinburne, et al.”

Mendes notes an 1898 reprint published at Paris, and more  interestinglyfor you perhaps one done at New York c. 1930 with the false imprint ‘Paris et London, 1898’; I suspect it was this latter from which the Venus Library edition was taken.

V1020-T. — Gerda Mundinger [Paul Little] — Corporal Punishment. 1971. Pp. ix+146. $1.95.

Original Edition Marlow Ltd, c1970. One of a series of pseudo-sociological studies with invented case-histories by Paul little under this pseudonym.

It includes translations of  both books as Volume One and Two.  It is likely that the translation is by Little – it reads like his other translations and we know he was very literate in both French and German and he was by far the most prolific contributor to that imprint. Under the Business as Usual title the Olympia Press published it in their Ophelia Press series in February 1958, with the authorship credited to ‘Soliman Peters.’ When Girodias discovered the deception, he re-issued the novel (still in the Ophelia Press series) as Springtime in Paris by ‘Theobald Lovelace.’ The two Ophelia editions are in general identical, the sheets of the first issue being merely given the new title page of the second. However, the first page of text in the second issue was re-written to further conceal the book’s origin. Reprinted by Collectors Publications in July 1967 with an Introduction by Edward S. V1062-R. – Jessie. – Confessions of an English maid. 1972. Pp. 287. $2.25.

Original (English) by Gilbert San Martin, Ophelia Press, Paris, 1937, subtitled  Jessie, or, The Confessions of a Fellatrix.. 1st US printing Brandon House 3022, 1968. Later reprints by Nexus, 1984 and Carroll & Graf, 1984. Ebook version by Locus Elm Press. The following description is from the ebook edition. “When precocious and inquisitive Jessie is caught in a compromising position with her foster sibling Rene, she, being the most unruly is shown the door. It is no long before she is on the steps of Madame Lafronde’s home for wayward delinquents, young woman of licentious character and looks to match. Seeing that Jessie is slight of frame and young of features she sees an opportunity to earn a not inconsiderable amount of a money from the gentlemen callers that usually drop into her establishment for a diversion or two. It doesn’t take much convincing before Jessie is pretending to be younger than her eighteen years, and even less persuading to provide whatever reasonable service the dirty codgers might require. With Lords and the landed, cads and the discerning, Jessie plays the siren with the wildest of abandons. Her urges even stretch to the other females of the house, partaking in tribadism, stimulation, and gamahuching a plenty. But what will become of her when she becomes the willing and well reward plaything of Monty?”

A reprint of a work originally published at Paris in 1903 by Charles Hirsch. Flagellation novel in the typical style of this prolific writer (or writers) most of which have not had English translation.

V1080-K. – Christopher Blue. – A Lustful Female. 1972. Pp. 152. $1.75.

There was a work published in 1938 that may or may not be related to this Venus Library title: A Lustful female: a study of the female past thirty, her reaction when engaged in the art of love- making and her lustful private life. All of this and more is described in this volume by a famous author whose name we connot [sic] divulge (London, Eng. [?New York:] 1938). Certainly the females in this novel are lustful and the text is pre-war.

The rear cover of the book refers to a review of an 1891 edition of the book, but if it is Victorian, it was not issued under this title. The loosely structured book covers the sexual initiation of the eponymous narrator at the hands of young ladies, a dissertation on flagellation with examples and other interludes.

The authorship of the Ms. is credited to ‘Caramba’; ‘Victor Cravat’ is presumably an invention of the Venus Library editor. Blue Moon edition Suzette, 2000.

First openly published edition, a reduced facsimile reprint of the clandestine U.S. original c.1930 edition (dating tentative; based upon internal evidence). This vintage American erotic novel, not found in any of the standard references, is a sexual coming of age story: precocious Mildred learns the joys of sex from her friend Marjorie, becomes the kept-woman of an experienced lesbian (and participates in a drag-party-orgy with homosexuals of both sexes), then the kept-woman of an older man enlisting her assigned maid and butler into their debauches. Set during Prohibition, features a scene in which douche-bags filled with liquor are suspended from the ceiling, their hoses within reach of parched (or otherwise) lips so that orgy participants may quench their thirsts while their hungers are being satisfied.

V1092-T. – Colonel and Lady Spanker. – Tales of Fun and Flagellation. 1972. Pp. 181. $1.95.

This book contains two separate tales. The first, and most well-known, is An Experimental Lecture on Flagellation with a sub-title Descriptive of the Exciting and Voluptuous Pleasures to be Derived from Crushing and Humiliating the Spirit of a Beautiful and Modest Girl delivered in the Assembly Room of the Society, Mayfair. The sub-title being an excellent description of the content. Printed by William Lazenby, 1878-9. Ashbee claims Lazenby was also the author. Several subsequent reprints. E-book version available. The second is Lady Gay Spankers Tales of Fun & Flagellation, Carrington, 1896. V1095-K. – Ashe Mannix.(P.N. Dedeaux) [Geoffrey Wagner] – The Violated. 1972. Pp. 154. $1.75.

The attribution to Dedeaux is tentative, but stylistic analysis software gives a good match and the plot is the only one which matches the title “Rosie’s Aunt” which is one of the eight Wagner titles mentioned in the papers of Barney Rossett. Given the demands of Kable News for more titles it is highly unlikely to inconceivable that Rossett would have held back a Wagner in his possession. There is a Blue Moon reprint Janet, Librarian, by Ralph Mello, 2000. The tale concerns Janet Westwood, a librarian with masochistic tendencies, and her orphaned niece Rosemary, who are abducted, whipped and violated by a gang of unsavoury characters.

La Femme et son Maitre seems first to have been published, in French, in 1902.
